Network Setup

Connect your BeamTracker to the internet via WiFi or 4G/LTE router using the built-in touchscreen.

Overview

BeamTracker requires an internet connection to transmit production data to the IoTFlows Cloud. You have two connectivity options:

  • Option 1: IoTFlows 4G/LTE Router (plug & play, no configuration)
  • Option 2: Facility WiFi (2.4 GHz only)

Unique to BeamTracker: The built-in touchscreen provides on-device status and configuration, making setup easier.

Option 1: Using IoTFlows 4G/LTE Router

If your BeamTracker includes an IoTFlows 4G/LTE router:

  1. Connect and power the router
  2. Place it near a window or open area for optimal cellular signal
  3. Ensure the router is within 100 ft (30 m) of the BeamTracker device
  4. Power on the BeamTracker

After a few minutes, the router connects to the cellular network, and BeamTracker automatically connects to its access point and appears online in your IoTFlows dashboard.

No manual setup required — ideal for isolated networks or air-gapped environments where you want zero access to factory systems.

4G/LTE Router

Verify connection on screen:

  • BeamTracker screen will show connection status
  • Look for "Connected" or network icon
  • Device will appear online in dashboard within 5 minutes

Option 2: Connecting to Facility WiFi

If you prefer to use your facility's WiFi network:

  • WiFi network must be 2.4 GHz (5 GHz not supported)
  • IoTFlows Mobile App installed on your phone
  • Bluetooth enabled on your phone
  • Access to BeamTracker touchscreen

Troubleshooting

WiFi Setup Not Appearing on Screen

Symptoms:

  • Screen doesn't show WiFi configuration option
  • QR code not displayed
  • Can't access network settings

Solutions:

  1. Check device is fully booted — wait 2-3 minutes after power on
  2. Navigate to Settings:
    • Tap Settings icon (gear or menu)
    • Look for WiFi, Network, or Connectivity option
  3. Restart device — power cycle and try again
  4. Check touchscreen responsiveness — ensure screen is working

Can't Connect to WiFi Network

Symptoms:

  • Screen shows "Connection Failed"
  • "Unable to connect" message displayed
  • Device not appearing in dashboard

Solutions:

1. Verify Network Compatibility:

  • Confirm your WiFi is 2.4 GHz (not 5 GHz)
  • Check that network is not hidden
  • Ensure network uses WPA/WPA2 security (WEP not supported)

2. Check WiFi Password:

  • Re-enter password carefully in mobile app
  • Watch for typos (case-sensitive)
  • Verify password is correct by testing on another device

3. Check Router Settings:

  • Ensure router allows new device connections
  • Check if MAC address filtering is enabled (add BeamTracker MAC address)
  • Verify DHCP is enabled
  • Check firewall isn't blocking IoTFlows traffic (port 443 outbound)

4. Check Signal Strength:

  • Move BeamTracker closer to router (or hotspot device) temporarily to test
  • Ensure router is within 100 ft (30 m)
  • Check for physical obstructions (metal walls, equipment)
  • Reposition external antenna for better reception

WiFi Connection Drops Frequently

Symptoms:

  • Screen intermittently shows "No Connection"
  • Device shows offline in dashboard
  • Data gaps in production reports

Solutions:

1. Improve WiFi Signal:

  • Move router closer to BeamTracker
  • Reduce physical obstructions
  • Consider WiFi range extender
  • Check for interference from other 2.4 GHz devices
  • Reposition external antenna

2. Check Router Health:

  • Restart router
  • Update router firmware
  • Check for too many connected devices
  • Verify internet connection stability

3. Alternative Solutions:

  • Consider switching to IoTFlows 4G/LTE router for more reliable connectivity
  • Contact support for persistent connection issues

Device Shows Offline in Dashboard

Symptoms:

  • Dashboard shows device as "Offline"
  • No recent production data updates
  • Screen shows "Connected" but dashboard doesn't

Solutions:

  1. Check screen status — verify "Connected" is displayed
  2. Refresh dashboard page in web browser
  3. Check internet connection — ensure router has internet access, not just local network
  4. Power cycle device — disconnect and reconnect power
  5. Check IoTFlows cloud status — visit status page
  6. Wait 5-10 minutes — device may be reconnecting
  7. Verify firewall settings — ensure HTTPS / MQTTS traffic allowed (port 443)

Bluetooth Pairing Issues (Mobile App)

Symptoms:

  • Mobile app can't find BeamTracker
  • Pairing fails repeatedly
  • "Device not found" error

Solutions:

  1. Enable Bluetooth on phone and ensure it's active
  2. Move phone closer to BeamTracker (within 10 ft / 3m)
  3. Check app permissions:
    • Bluetooth (required)
    • Location (required on Android for Bluetooth scanning)
  4. Restart mobile app — force close and reopen
  5. Ensure BeamTracker is in WiFi setup mode — check screen displays QR code
  6. Update mobile app to latest version
  7. Try different phone if available

Network Security

Data Encryption:

  • All data transmitted via HTTPS/SSL
  • End-to-end encryption from device to cloud
  • Secure authentication protocols

Network Requirements:

  • Outbound HTTPS / MQTTS (port 443) must be allowed
  • No inbound ports required
  • Works with most corporate firewalls
  • DHCP required

Screen Tips

Touchscreen Best Practices:

  • Clean screen regularly with soft, dry cloth
  • Avoid harsh chemicals — use only screen-safe cleaners
  • Don't use sharp objects to tap screen
